Engine Head
The Engine Head – Its Role
The engine head is responsible for sealing the combustion chamber. It houses the timing mechanism that controls the operation of the valves.
How Tight Should the Engine Head Be Fastened?
The engine head should be fastened with a precisely defined force to achieve uniform pressure across its entire surface that adjoins the block. The torque values for fastening the head must conform to the specifications provided by the engine manufacturer. Over-tightening can damage the head, while under-tightening can lead to leaks.
How to Select a Head Gasket?
The head gasket is selected based on the thickness parameter. This can vary, especially in diesel engines. Such a gasket is used in engine repairs where removing the head is necessary, and its thickness is determined by the protrusion of the piston crown above the block’s surface at the top dead center.
How Many Times Can the Head Be Resurfaced?
Manufacturers of engine heads have allowed for the possibility of multiple resurfacings by including special control points that indicate the minimum height of the head to maintain the correct operating parameters of the engine.
When Is a Thicker Head Gasket Used?
A thicker head gasket is used when it is required by the protrusion of the piston crown above the block’s surface at the top dead center.
Over-Tightened Engine Head
Over-tightening the engine head can lead to its damage.
Under-Tightened Engine Head
Under-tightening the engine head will result in leaks.
